Footballers have been known to experiment with their hairstyles for
as long as we can remember. As children we looked up to them – making
sure our barbers styled our hair to match our favourite footballers.
Even though we turned out just fine, the United Arab Emirates Football Association (UAEFA) is
of the opinion that there are certain hairstyles that can corrupt
children. For that reason, they are calling out Ghanaian football star, Asamoah Gyan, for his “unethical hair”.
According to BBC,
Gyan who is on loan to Al Ahli F.C., is not alone in this. Like him, 45
foreign players in the country have been issued warning letters by the
association to get rid of their hairstyles, which go against some
Islamic teachings banning the partial shaving off one’s head.
Match officials in the country are concerned about children copying
the hairstyles. On these grounds, a referee can stop a player from
taking part in a match. It doesn’t end there: if Gyan and the other
players don’t comply with the directive, the UAEFA will fine them and,
probably, have them suspended.
