Taken by Mr.ajir, straight forward and one of the most technical courses you will offer in your year1. THINGS TO NOTE;

§  Buy his book (introduction to sociology) because no hand out is as important as the book, no question will come outside the book, all his questions will come from the book. his test is mostly structural, for the help of those who don’t understand what structural is:

§  DEMIAN IS THE__________OF__________LEVEL, FACULTY OF ______________(course reps,100,law)…if you mistakenly cancel any word(answer) while writing, you will fail that question, so you need to be careful no matter how you find the questions simple, don’t be in a haste, gra gra is not needed here, be careful and the answer must be spelt correctly.

POL101

Taken by Prof. Sorkaa, the former VC of Benue State University. He is the former vc, he knows almost everything relating to academics in B.S.U so you need to be careful.

He doesn’t find it offensive sketching marks for students who don’t take academics serious. Very technical, he mostly gives an assignment a week to his test and the assignment is submitted on test day, the test question is mostly in similarity with the question of the assignment. That is why you need to make sure the assignment is done by you or even if you aided by someone, you understand what he/she has done for you so on the Test day, you won’t find difficulties. He hates copy and paste work. Test is normally essay.

TEST; 20marks

ASSIGNMENT; 20marks

EXAMS; 60marks

SOC105:

Partly history, just like current affairs, but don’t even think of missing the lectures, his notes is what you will see in exams. Develop the habit of taking notes during lectures and reading them without hesitation. Test is OBJ, exam is OBJ.. if there is going to be any changes, he will let you know about it.

PSY101

Psychology is a very technical department that if you are offering any course and you don’t take it serious, you will have issues. Check this out:

§  The mostly don’t write Test: exams is marked over 100.

§  You can’t find an accurate material (hand outs) in the labor market; you have to attend lectures to keep to date on notes.

§  More than one lecturer will take you guys on different topics in the course which means exams will be set by different persons.

§  You have to read not to cram but understand because their questions are twisted.

§  Make use of past questions.

It is no longer news that you are a law student and your friends and family members now call you Barrister-Lawyer, it’s wonderful…it is still no news that you will spend 5years in school unlike your mates in other departments who are aiming 4years. Now let’s work it out using statistics;

100level is a class where you will have to root yourself up well (build your G.P) because as you proceed higher, it gets hotter and automatically, your G.P begins to drop. If your G.P wasn’t built well in your 100level, you will experience difficulties. In most cases, students experience “G.P FINISH”, this is when their G.P can no longer be counted, there are no more left with options than;

§  Either the leave the department to another department

§  Are withdrawn from school

§  Or manage to reach 500level; in a case where you manage to reach 500level and you are yet to cover up your T.C.E, you will be left with no option than to spill for a period of two more years, making it 7years in school, don’t forget you will still be paying fees for that two years. if you can’t cover up your T.C.E after the period of two years, you will be advice to withdraw which is the polite way of the university telling you to pack your load and go. Instead of receiving a certificate, you will rather receive a hand shake.T.C.E for law is 194 while for other departments is 164…so you see, you need to hard work. The departmental handbook issued to you will cover the full explanations of how to calculate your T.C.E and G.P.

LEGAL METHODS:

This course is a 2credit load course taken by Mr. Raphael okplogidi and headed by prof. J.N. Samba. It is very important you take this course serious, pardon me to say more and very serious because it is your foundation in the legal profession. Don’t just read and study it because you need an A… read and study it because you yearn to know it’s contents. What it’s all about, I mean the in and out of it.

Your level of understanding in this course guarantees your level of understanding as you proceed. As a matter of concern, it’s pertinent to note that law courses are interwoven and what you are doing today In this course is what you will do even when you are practicing. If you have legal methods in your hand, have it in mind you will excel without much stress in your legal system, legal profession and partly constitutional law all in your 200level…mind you, this are 3powerful courses I’m talking about.

§  You have to develop the skills of answering questions using law terminologies (the legal language, words).

§  Develop the habit of asking lectures questions where you find issues confusing or not clear….

WELCOME TO BENUE STATE UNIVERSITY (B.S.U)

I guess by now you must have heard a lot about where you find yourself, be it positive or negative, it’s natural and bound to happen most especially when you find yourself in a new environment and you are a JJC in that field or sphere of life. You are not only inquisitive to finding answers to questions but also to knowing and distinguishing from your left and right so as to avoid being confused and landing into same problems most people(those ahead of you) landed themselves into. i.e learning from their mistakes.

I will restrict this article to the law students but subsequent ones will cover other departments. Though very important facts can still be extracted from this article by non-law students. After all there is a saying that “NO KNOWLEDGE IS WASTED” and above all “INFORMATION (KNOWLEDGE) IS POWER”.

I know before you were offered admission to study law, you had the opportunity to at least approximately guess how many students applied with you to study law and the percentage of assurance you had to be offered admission this course of your choice to study. Notwithstanding that fact, you had your own plans to make the necessary connection so that in case plan A fails, plan B will work.

Law is not only a practicing profession but also an applied profession, the stress of developing reading and study skills as a law student is very vital and essential. In your year1; you will discover you are offering only one law core course which is Legal Methods, this does not mean you won’t take other courses serious. It is even more important to take other courses serious so you can lay a good foundation by building a rooted G.P to help you up to your 500level.

Also there are some key points you have to note which will enable you excel in your year one. Some of which are

§  Your introduction to write ups.

§  A strong body content

§  A conclusion

§  Hit the major point of discussion in write ups before you talk less important things

§  Never underrate assignments given to you. E.g “go and make research on this , just read it (it might be a test or exam question)

§  Always make sure your Test is above 25

§  Make use of past questions, repetition is a key element.

All these and many others in my subsequent articles will be elaborated more.

Before I delve into analyzing each course and what you should expect, it’s very important to boost your nerves so you can know the kind of minds needed in B.S.U and the faculty of law.
